Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun
• Thumbs up to the city of San Luis, which is set to launch a yearlong test program to see whether a recycling program is feasible. Giving such a system a test drive is a good idea to gauge resident interest, before investing in a city-wide program.
• Thumbs up to the American Legion Post 19 and Lowe’s, which recently partnered on a project to collect worn-out American flags. Now there is a box at the entrance to Lowe’s to collect the flags, which will later be properly disposed of by Post 19.
• Thumbs up to Yuma County Sheriff’s Deputy Juan Peralta, who was recently recognized for his calm and professional actions in multiple life-threatening situations. Thank you for your service, Deputy Peralta!
• Thumbs up to the sports teams at Arizona Western College as their seasons get underway. Best of luck, teams!
• Thumbs up to those who volunteer to serve at CASA, helping as advocates for children in the foster system!
• Thumbs up to the local businesses that host restaurant takeovers, and donate proceeds to individuals or groups to help reach fundraising goals. Your community support is greatly appreciated!
• Thumbs down to the report that a house fire in Yuma was intentionally set. The blaze, in the 900 block of South 1st Avenue, took place at a vacant house, and no one was injured. However, such actions can endanger the lives of others and destroy property.
• Thumbs down to the report of a border tunnel linking San Luis, Ariz., to San Luis Rio Colorado, Son. Officials said the tunnel was used to bring drugs across the border, noting that during the bust, three kilograms of fentanyl (equivalent to 3 million doses), 118 kilograms of meth, six kilograms of cocaine, 13 kilograms of white heroin and six kilograms of brown heroin were found.
