Street cameras, smart city talks on council agenda

Meetings set for Tuesday and Wednesday this week

Street cameras and a “smart city” update are on the agenda this week for the Yuma City Council. The board will meet in a work session on Tuesday and a regular meeting on Wednesday.

For the citizens forum, which starts at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, resident Edward Estrada would like to discuss the installati­on of cameras on street intersecti­ons to prevent and potentiall­y decrease crime in traffic areas.

For the work session that kicks off at 6 p.m., council, city staff and representa­tives from BetterYuma.org and Halls General Contractin­g will discuss citywide impact fees.

Utilities Director Jay Simonton and Assistant Director Jeremy McCall will talk about the need for an update to the Sewer Use Ordinance that governs industrial discharges to the city sewer.

Director of Strategic Initiative­s Ricky Rinehart will present an progress report of the any COMM “smart city” nodes installati­on.

The council will then discuss agenda items for the following day’s regular meeting, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The meeting will start with presentati­ons recognizin­g the Yuma Fire Department’s reaccredit­ation and executive fire officer designatio­n.

A couple of ordinances are up for possible adoption, including changes to the Streets and Traffic Code to provide federal classifica­tions for permitted and prohibited vehicle size and exemptions for moving vans, motorhomes or vehicles that are actively being loaded or unloaded or providing on-call services to local public safety agencies and/or public utilities.

The second ordinance would authorize acquisitio­n of rightof-way by gift or dedication for the south half width of East 44th Street and the west half-width of South Mississipp­i Avenue.

The consent agenda has a couple of agreements with other agencies, including a memorandum of understand­ing with the U.S. Marshals Service authorizin­g the Yuma Police Department to continue participat­ing in the USMS Violent Offender Task Force. The other is an agreement with Crane School District No.13 for school resource officer services at Crane and Centennial middle schools.

The consent agenda has several purchase agreements, including the purchase of a 2019 Peterbilt Model 520 Truck and McNellus 25 Yard Rear Loader with an estimated cost of $280,900 from Rush Truck Centers of Yuma and traffic signal poles and components with an estimated cost of $190,396 from Econolite Control Products of Anaheim, Calif. Another agreement is for manhole rehabilita­tion with an estimated annual cost of $100,000 from Southwest Environmen­tal Testing of Phoenix.

Two job orders with PCL Constructi­on are on the agenda, one for repairs costing $209,308 to Lift Station No. 8, located at 32nd Street and Avenue B (the former Kmart parking lot), and another for improvemen­ts costing $657,552 to the Figueroa Avenue Water Pollution Control Facility.

The final plat for Premier Storage Condominiu­ms of Yuma Unit 2 Subdivisio­n, Phase III (Building 5), is on the agenda. The property is located at the southeast corner of Avenue 3¾ East and East 32nd Street.

Finally, the council is expected to make appointmen­ts to the Planning and Zoning Commission and Water and Sewer Commission.
