Labor Day celebrates U.S. workers

Day is the third favorite holiday in America, study finds

-

If you spent today traveling, you aren’t alone. According to WalletHub, approximately 25 percent of Americans plan to get out of town for the Labor Day holiday.

The agency notes that the top destinations are New York, Orlando, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Chicago. We’re close to Los Angeles and Vegas, but we’re guessing for most Yumans, the top destination is probably a sweet beach in San Diego.

Maybe not, though. There is plenty going on here this weekend to keep people at home.

Dove season kicked off Saturday, so those who love to hunt may stay home and partake in the fun. We also have the Colorado River, which is always a popular spot on Labor Day.

For many, Labor Day is a window dedicated to rest, relaxation and a break from work. In fact, an estimated 40.6 percent of Americans plan to barbeque over the holiday.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the day is “dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country.”

WalletHub reports that it is the third favorite holiday for Americans, coming in behind No. 1 Christmas/Chanukah and No. 2, Memorial Day.

That statistic is a little surprising, coming in ahead of such awesome days like Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Veterans Day and New Year’s.

But there is something rather amazing about Labor Day. It’s a day to celebrate American workers, however those workers choose to celebrate, be it by traveling, playing outside, or relaxing with loved ones watching TV inside. For those who have it off, it’s a free day that can be used in any number of ways.
