Local subcontractors sought for school construction

Those interested are invited to a job fair on Tuesday

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

As plans come to fruition for a new elementary school in Yuma, local subcontractors are being sought to work on the project.

Materials provided by McCarthy Building Companies shows that the company was selected as the general contractor for the construction of the new Dorothy Hall Elementary School campus for Yuma Elementary School District One.

A McCarthy news release states that the new K-5th grade school includes the construction of three new buildings on the 10acre site at 44th Street and Avenue 6E.

In total, the three new buildings will provide 45,696 square feet for the district’s new administrative offices, a cafeteria, music and art rooms, as well as 24 classrooms. Additionally, the release shows that a new parking lot, ball fields and outdoor basketball courts will be constructed on the campus.

Construction is scheduled to begin in October and be completed by July 2019.

Area subcontractors interested in working on the project are invited to attend a job fair from 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4, in the cafeteria of Ron Watson Middle School, 9851 E. 28th St.

The job fair will provide an opportunity for subcontractors to learn about the project and submit bids for the project.

“Our Yuma-based construction teams have been working with the district and community over the past several months to make their vision of the new campus a reality,” said John Kovesdy, project manager for McCarthy in a statement. “We are excited to begin the project and deliver students, teachers and administrators a new school in time for the start of school next year.”

According to the McCarthy release, the company hopes to hire Yuma-area contractors specializing in the following areas: site utilities, landscape, concrete, masonry, steel, framing and drywall, paint, roofing, flooring, tile, acoustical ceiling, mechanical, plumbing and electrical services during the job fair.

Currently working with McCarthy on the project is Yuma-based Thompson Design Architects, the release says.

“Yuma Elementary School District #1 is excited to begin construction on Dorothy Hall Elementary School,” said James Sheldahl, Yuma Elementary District Superintendent in a statement. “This state-ofthe-art school will be the first new school built in District #1 since 2006. The school is designed to serve up to 600 students, preschool through fifth grade, with a comprehensive personalized curriculum that includes art, music, physical education and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education for every student.”

The new Dorothy Hall Elementary School campus was approved by voters in the 2014 bond election.
