Raiders, Criminals square off at YGCC
Cibola finishes in second place behind Lake Havasu, Yuma High doesn’t have team score
Wednesday was a big day for Cibola junior Hunter Nelson on the course.
Nelson, who was an allregion selection last season, helped his team’s score stay down with a first-place 37 (one over par) over nine holes.
“He’s coming around,” Cibola coach Daniel Villalpando said. “He had a rough first round (on the season). I think he was a little nervous because he does want to make state. I think as we’ve been playing he’s gotten a little more comfortable. He knows how to take it one stroke, one hole and one match at a time.” The team didn’t fare as well during the tri-meet at the Yuma Golf and Country Club. Lake Havasu finished first as a team with a 178, while Cibola was behind them with a 201.
Yuma High only had two golfers on the boys side of the meet and didn’t compile an overall score.
The Raiders’ scoring was filled out by Michael Moreno (48) in fifth, Austin Gomes (54) in seventh and Gavin Salomon (62) in a ninth-place tie.
The Crims were represented by junior Arturo Villarreal (60) in eighth and senior Jaiden Haddock (62) in a ninthplace tie.
Neither Cibola or Yuma High came back with team scores in the girls’ competition on Wednesday.
Cibola’s Dominique Gonzales had a nice outing with an 11-over par 47 to lead her team.
Senior Kimberlie Ambriz led the Crims with a 65.
“It’s an everyday thing,” Yuma High coach Nick Johnson said. “They are learning every single day. The most important thing right now is that they are having fun. They have been swinging the clubs for five weeks and golf is a game that takes practice.”
