Some students at Yuma Catholic High School will have financial support for the 2018-19 school year thanks to the Pasquinelli Foundation, which has donated $100,000 for student scholarships.

According to YC director of advancement Bobbi Ukura, 84 percent of the student body is receiving tuition support.

“I am convinced, and the experience of our graduates has proven that a Yuma Catholic High School education will put a young man or woman on a direct path to high achievement in college and in life,” said Pasquinelli Foundation chair Gary Pasquinelli in a statement. “The Pasquinelli Foundation is helping sow the seeds for a future full of promise for these young people.”

In total, 20 scholarships were given to YC students, with five awarded to incoming freshman. Each student receives $5,000 per year.

“The Pasquinelli (Foundation) awards the scholarships for the student’s freshman year and then supports them for the same amount for the remaining three years of their high school career,” Ukura wrote in an email to the Yuma Sun. “We have students in grades 9 through 12.”

She added that this year marked the fifth school year that the foundation has awarded scholarships.

“The faculty, staff and families at Yuma Catholic High School are extremely grateful to the Pasquinelli Foundation and Pasquinelli family for their continued faith in Yuma Catholic and our families,” Ukura said. “Their support is integral to student success in education and life.”

To receive a scholarship, the families of students were required to submit applications in the April/ May time frame. The application was available on the YC website.

Ukura said a committee made up of Pasquinelli Foundation members and YC personnel selected the recipients based on academic merit. To keep their scholarships, students must also meet both the scholarship’s yearly 3.0 grade point average and a good conduct requirement.

“Deacon Gary Pasquinelli and the Pasquinelli Foundation continually demonstrate their faith in Yuma Catholic High School and our students,” said YC principal Rhett Stallworth in a statement. “These scholarships enable us to serve the entire community and provide tools to help families choose YC. Exciting things are happening at Yuma Catholic with new programs like FFA. We are looking forward to a great year ahead thanks to supporters like the Pasquinelli Foundation.”
