Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

- GREGORY GARDNER

• Thumbs up to the students, teachers and staff at San Luis High School for their efforts toward making the campus a safer place to be. The school has added security measures, and is encouraging parents and students alike to take a proactive role in keeping the campus safe.

• Thumbs up to the 96 Crane School District students who achieved perfect scores on the AZMerit statewide assessment. The students (and their teachers and parents!) should be commended for their hard work!

• Thumbs up to the Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department, which recently announced it will add emergency medical technicians and paramedics thanks to a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and matching funds from the City of Somerton. The funds will allow the agency to better respond to emergency situations and better serve the community. • Thumbs up to the Yumans who spent $20 on the 20th, to support local businesses! We appreciate your patronage!

• Thumbs up to the dove hunters who made our September season a safe, successful event!

• Thumbs up to the Pasquinelli Foundation, which recently donated $100,000 for student scholarships to Yuma Catholic High School!

• Thumbs down to the report this week that creating a Space Force would cost an estimated $12.9 billion in its first five years. Holy bananas. One has to pause for a moment and weigh if that money should be used on a space force, or if there are other projects on the ground in need of some attention.

• Thumbs down to the unsettling incident on Monday morning where a driver was impaled with a steel pipe after swerving to avoid a semitruck. The driver was flown to Phoenix for treatment, and our thoughts are with both him and his family. Be safe out there, Yuma.

Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down are compiled by the Yuma Sun editorial board, based on recent events, happenings and activities around Yuma County and the nation, and will appear on Fridays in the Yuma Sun.

DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS OR NOT?

One thing that puzzles me is how someone like Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh can be accused by someone from 35 years ago of allegedly misconduct and Diane Feinstein and the liberals on the left go ballistic. Yet one of their own, the revered Ted Kennedy, is responsible for the accident that led to the drowning death of a young woman he had been alone with late one night. Ted Kennedy, of course was the party elder statesman. He was considered that party’s presidential hopeful. So, tell me once again how Democrats are the party of the oppressed women and let’s hear more about how there is no separate standards of justice. Lady Liberty may be wearing a blindfold, but some of us believe she peeks to see voter registration cards.
