YC dominates Bourgade in blowout win

- FROM STAFF REPORTS FROM STAFF REPORTS

Yuma Catholic was able to flush last week’s loss out of its system on Friday with a blowout win over Bourgade Catholic.

The Shamrocks put on an offensive show in the first half to win 55-17 on the road.

The 38-point win probably wasn’t that close though as YC (5-2 AIA, 1-1 region) sprinted out to a 55-3 lead in the first half. The Golden Eagles (5-2, 0-1) were able to tighten the final margin a bit with two touchdowns on the running clock.

“We definitely played the first half like we’re supposed to play,” Yuma Catholic coach Rhett Stallworth said. “We went out there and executed. We played it nice, clean and crisp. Before you know it we had 55 points in the first half.”

With most of the offensive firepower coming on display in the first half, many of the starters didn’t play much after the break.

Junior quarterback Gage Reese was 11 of 13 with 335 yards and five touchdowns.

Reese found senior receiver J.R. Henderson five times for 212 yards and two touchdowns, and junior running back Ean Chavez three times for 67 yards and

Gila Ridge had to rely on its defense to pull through again on Friday night.

The Hawks endured a couple of self-inflicted mistakes in a 20-14 win over Buckeye.

Early in the game Gila Ridge turned the ball over deep inside its own territory to set Buckeye up with a short field. Buckeye went up 7-0.

“We looked good. We played well. Defensively we stifled their offense,” Gila Ridge coach Corey Semler said. “Offensively our mantra has been to take care of the football. Tonight we had a turnover in our own end that led to Buckeye’s score.”

After falling behind early Gila Ridge (5-2, AIA, 2-0 region) settled in offensively, and scored on its final two possessions of the first half.

To close the second quarter they had to go into a two-minute drill. Gila Ridge drove the length of the field in 2:06 to set up an eight-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Kaleb Cota to junior running back Renan Duarte. That touchdown gave them a 13-7 lead at halftime.

Cota finished 15-for-20 with 145 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while Duarte had 16 carries for 56 yards and a touchdown on the ground to go along with his receiving touchdown.
