Antelope wins again, stays perfect in region play

- BY GRADY GARRETT @GRADYGARRETT

In the fourth quarter of Friday night’s game in Wellton, an Antelope assistant coach implored the Rams’ defense to get a red zone stop.

“Nobody scores on you guys!” he shouted. “Nobody!”

On the next play, though, Scottsdale Prep’s Oscar Frias found Finley Hobbs for an 11-yard touchdown — significant only because it was the first time in four games that an opponent scored on the Rams’ defense.

It didn’t matter to the outcome, however, because Antelope already had the game in the bag.

With a 34-7 victory over Scottsdale Prep, the Rams improved to 7-2 overall (6-2 AIA) and stayed perfect in 2A Salt region play, setting up a de facto region title game next week against North Pointe Prep (7-1 AIA, 3-0 region).

“This puts us still in control of our destiny,” Antelope coach Gary Mauldin said. “I just told the players, (the) North Pointe Prep (game) will probably be for the region title, and that’s something that’s really exciting for the school, players and staff.”

Antelope had suffered eight straight losing seasons prior to this one, and the seven wins this year already matches the program’s most since 2007.

The Rams entered this week having dominated their last three opponents — 46-0 over San Carlos, 33-0 over Veritas Prep and 58-0
