AWC women clinch first conference championship
Matadors improve to 18-0 this season with two games remaining in the regular season
The Arizona Western women’s soccer team can take a moment to celebrate on Tuesday night after clinching the first ACCAC title in program history.
The Matadors beat Cochise 3-0 to improve to 18-0 in league play. The win also clinched the top seed in the Region I playoffs. Christiana Boateng led the way again with two first-half goals. She scored in the 11th and 35th minute to put her team up 2-0 at the break. Boateng now has 25 goals for the season. Assists on those goals came from Karen Melendrez and Michala Vereen.
The team scored once more in the 66th minute from Elizabeth Ephraim found Asare Vera for his seventh goal of the season.
AWC will be back on Thursday at Mesa.
AWC men fall hard
Arizona Western couldn’t keep up with the hotstreak on Tuesday afternoon.
The Matadors (12-5-1 ACCAC) were thumped by Yavapai (14-5 overall, 13-5 ACCAC), 4-1.
The one goal came from Jamison Ingram in the 56th minute.
The Roughriders were led by a goal from Cibola graduated Gabriel Claudio and two goals from Gila Ridge grad Esteban Franco.
Yavapai had 28 shots to AWC’s 7.
Gila Ridge downs Buckeye
Gila Ridge volleyball made short work of Buckeye on Tuesday night.
The Hawks won in three quick sets (25-12, 25-18, 2514) with some help at the service line.
Kaylin Ellsworth had six aces and five kills, Tinley Schmidgall had five aces and three kills, and Danielle Monroe had six kills.
Gila Ridge is now 5-10 in AIA play and 2-4 in the region.
