Injured Bosa leaves Ohio State to prep for pro career

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Injured defensive end Nick Bosa has decided to leave to school to focus on getting ready for the NFL draft in the spring, Ohio State said Tuesday.

The junior All-American from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, already had four sacks this season when he suffered a core muscle injury on Sept. 15 in the third game of the season. He had surgery five days later, and no timetable was set for his return to the team.

Considered one of the best players in college football, Bosa had left no doubt that he would leave school after this season to enter the draft.

Testimony ends at college basketball trial

NEW YORK — Testimony at a trial about secret payments in college basketball drew to a close Tuesday after prosecutors asked the jury to focus on a flurry of texts and phone calls, some involving legendary Louisville coach Rick Pitino, about Brian Bowen Jr. in the days before the prized prospect committed to the school.

Christian Dawkins, a business manager courting Bowen’s family, former amateur league director Merl Code and former Adidas executive James Gatto have pleaded not guilty in federal court in Manhattan to charges that they committed fraud by funneling funds to families of coveted prospects to get them to attend major programs sponsored by the sneaker company.

Tuesday’s game wasn’t Kofa’s fastest start of the season, but the Kings were able to settle in after one set to sweep the final three against cross-town rival Cibola.

The Kings won (21-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-22), despite taking a set to shake off the rust after a 13-day layoff from regular season play.

“They played against some really good teams in Tucson (last weekend in a tournament). I think that made it a little bit better, but coming off of a relaxing break they were a little off,” Kofa coach Makyla Orman said.

Two weeks earlier the teams played to a surprising five-set Kofa victory, and early in the night the Raiders were gunning for the upset again. Cibola started the first set with an aggressive mind set, while the Kings had a couple of self-inflicted errors.

Cibola senior Honor Owens had a block to put her team up 14-13 in the first, and they pulled away from there. Sophomore Desirae Newman had a kill to close the set and win 25-21.

Owens finished with eight kills on the evening.

After the hot start to the game, the Raiders began playing more passive in the later sets, while Kofa’s experience and balance weighed in.

The Kings went on the attack with kills coming from seniors Pam Aguilar, Keiley Sharp and Jocelyn Weber in the second. Kofa led 18-17 in the second before picking it up with a 7-2 run to finish the set at 25-19.

Aguilar finished with 17 kills, Sharp had 18 kills and Weber had eight kills.

“I switched up who I had starting in the first set,” Orman said. “I think

HOUSTON — Jackie Bradley Jr. didn’t let his demeanor change this season, even as fans begged Boston to trade him during a miserable first-half slump.

Stayed steady after the biggest swing of his career, too.

Bradley belted a grand slam for his second big hit there was an initial shock with what was going on. I think getting back to the old group of people really helped them.”

“We had too many mistakes,” Cibola coach Becky Anderson said. “We make so many unforced errors compared to their winners. They had so many winners and kills. We just didn’t pick it up.”

The third set mirrored the second with Kofa senior Isabel Ponce distributing the ball out to her teammates and setting them up. Ponce had 43 assists and nearly every play ran through her.

The Kings slowly pulled away in the third set to win 25-18.

Cibola also made a handful of mistakes in that set to give up some opportunities.
