If you make a winning bid on an artificial Christmas tree, you get the tree and you also help protect a police dog and help toward animal care efforts in the Yuma area.
The newly formed group Raising Dollars for Dogs, Cash for Cats will take bids not only for the trees but Christmas wreaths and a variety of gift items at its first-ever fund-raising auction slated for Saturday at the Yuma Senior Living Center, 2600 S. 4th Ave.
A portion of the proceeds will go toward the purchase of a bulletproof vest for dogs the San Luis Police Department uses in its law enforcement efforts.
The remainder of the money will be used to cover the costs of emergency veterinary care for pet owners who can’t pay the bills, as well as for projects and programs in the area that benefit animals.
Ten artificial Christmas trees, all decorated, and a similar number of Christmas wreaths will go to the auction block, says Sherrell Judish, one of the founding members of Raising Dollars for Dogs, Cash for Cats.
Other items offered for bid will include custommade birdhouses, baskets, several pieces of custom jewelry, gift certificates to Yuma restaurants, handmade Christmas stockings and a child’s gift basket.
Saturday’s event also includes drawings for additional gift items.
People who want a preview of what will be auctioned can visit the Yuma Senior Living Center between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. They can also buy tickets for the drawings at that time.
A 3 p.m. reception will kick off festivities Saturday. Demonstrations by the San Luis Police Depart-
