The Crane Elementary School District governing board had the first reading of a proposed mission statement for the district when it met Tuesday.

Superintendent Laurie Doering said Wednesday morning that the new credo “better fits what we are trying to do as far as get worldclass thinkers and kids who can compete globally.”

The statement reads: “Growing a community of curious changemakers through innovative problem solving.”

It will have its second reading before a board vote at the next regular meeting, scheduled for 5 p.m. Dec. 11.

The Crane district’s current mission statement is “to maximize the individual potential of each student, in both academic and social achievement, through the dedication of all of its resources.”

Also Tuesday, the board saw the results of the latest parent satisfaction survey, in which the district got scores of at least 97 percent in all five areas that feedback was sought, Doering said, “so we were pleased

with that.”

In addition, the board recognized the success of two community efforts to help students from some of the poorest families in the district.

Doering said the recent “#KicksforCraneKids” drive netted 215 pairs of shoes, in an effort co-sponsored by ERA Matt Fischer, Stewart Title and Skechers Shoes.

“As we get into the winter months some families struggle to buy shoes, especially since the closed-toe shoes are more expensive than sandals,” she said.

Ekklesia Church and Pastor Augie Clarkson were also honored for providing “Power Packs,” a plastic bag of nutritious food, for children whose families may not have a lot to feed them on the weekends, when free or reduced meals aren’t available from the district.

The church has also sponsored a school carnival, painted neighborhood curbs and runs a uniform exchange for families.

Crane Middle School’s robotics, digital media and marketing classes also made presentations to the board.
