Dream Academy graduates 209 from San Luis

Arizona State University’s American Dream Academy graduated 209 San Luis High School students and parents on Nov. 13.

SLHS students and their parents completed the eight-week course, which culminated with the graduation. According to Christian Rosario, assistant director of the American Dream Academy, this is the largest class ASU has graduated this semester.

The American Dream Academy is a program designed to provide families with the tools needed to empower students, parents and teachers to transform expectations and learning methods, so that academic potential is maximized. Graduation from the program requires 100 percent involvement of both parents and students.

At the graduation student speaker Anthony Lara said, “We are very grateful for the opportunity you gave us to learn, step-bystep, about our college education, to achieve our goals and about all the benefits that the program offers to all students.”

All graduates were awarded a $4,000 scholarship toward their future college enrollment.

Cibola winter choir concert expanded to four nights

The popularity of the Cibola High School Choral Department’s annual winter concert has grown immensely each year. To help accommodate the show’s popularity, the 2018 concert, “Sing We All Noel,” has been expanded to four nights.

The concert opens on Dec. 4 and runs through Dec. 7. The show starts at 7 p.m. in the Cibola Auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with tickets available for $8 presale and $10 at the door (subject to availability).

“This year’s concert music represents a theme of togetherness, with repertoire from many cultures,” CHS Choir Director Brandon Stroup said. “Even the concert poster design expounds on this theme with both contemporary and traditional elements present. It is no secret that there is much divisiveness in our country and in our world, and we’d like to do our part to help counter this division - bringing people of all ages and backgrounds together through song.”

The show features nearly 300 Cibola choir students, 30 instrumentalists from Cibola and throughout the community, and a 50-member children’s chorus.

Presale tickets can be purchased at Fretworks in the Yuma Palms Mall and Gila Mountain United Methodist Church.
