The story is told of a farmer who needed a hired man. He tried several workers that failed to meet his standards. The farmer began to get desperate.
Another worker applied for the job. The farmer asked him, “What qualifies you for this job?” The potential worker responded, “I can sleep at night.” The response didn’t sound very promising. In desperation, the newcomer was hired.
That night there was a terrible storm. The farmer woke up, ran to the newly hired man’s room and tried to awaken him. He could not.
Speaking to himself he said, “I’ll take care of him in the morning.” The farmer went outside into the night in the driving rain. He found the barn door securely closed, the haystack was covered and the tractor was safe in the shed. There was nothing to do.
He returned to the house and went back to bed. Then he understood why his new hired man had said, “I can sleep at night.”
The Rev. Paul Killingsworth serves as pastor at Yuma First Assembly.
