Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

-

• Thumbs up to a successful Colorado River Crossing Balloon Festival! It’s an amazing way to kick off the holiday season!

• Thumbs up to the Boy Scouts at Yuma Proving Ground, who recently honored veterans with an Operation Blessing Bag project.

• Thumbs up to the decision to name a trail along the riverfront after Charles Flynn, former executive director of the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area. Flynn was at the heart of the efforts to restore and develop the riverfront, and the dedication is much deserved.

• Thumbs up to the new HAWK (high-intensity activated crosswalk) at the corner of 8th Street and 21st Avenue. The new system should be safer for pedestrians and motorists alike.

• Thumbs up to the Caballeros de Yuma, which gave away $119,000 in donations and scholarships in 2017-18.

• Thumbs up to the Yuma County residents who took the time to vote this election cycle. The turnout was much higher than usual, which is amazing. Thanks for voting, Yuma!

• Thumbs down to the lack of candidates for local school board races. School boards play a critical role in the education process, and are a chance to truly make a difference.

• Thumbs down to those who harassed the Yuma County employees who processed and counted the ballots from the last election. Why in the world would someone do that? Sometimes, we can’t help but wonder what people are thinking. That sort of behavior is completely uncalled for.

• Thumbs down to the thieves who are stealing copper pipes and water control valves. If you’ve been a victim, or have information on these cases, please call the Yuma Police Department.
