Socialism is false promise that fails every time

- GENE LEMON Yuma

David Gale’s well written letter, printed in the Yuma Sun on Dec. 6 accurately described the dangers of socialism; it most certainly is a false promise — a system that not only has failed every time it has been tried, but is the antithesis of the philosophies that prevailed as this country grew into the greatest nation on Earth.

Think about who — what groups — advocate for a socialistic type government. There are the elitists, some of them who want to dictate how we live our lives, thinking they know more about what’s better for us than we do, others who can use the system to control the nation’s wealth, and others who want both of those scenarios in place.

Then there are the idealists, thinking that the world should be a kinder, gentler place. They may be well intended, but they are naive. They don’t seem to understand, and give little consideration, to the inherent “weaknesses” of the human animal. There will always be people who will try to take unfair advantage of others.

Lastly, there are those who think it’s the responsibility of government to make their lives easier, and a large percentage of that group is made up people who aren’t doing very well, mostly because of their own behavior; they want those who have worked hard, for whatever they have, to give part of what they have earned to those who haven’t assumed responsibility for themselves. What’s right, or fair, about that?

Bottom line: Under socialism the rich will get richer and everyone else will get, on average, poorer. Mediocrity will become the norm because initiative will be destroyed. Decide for yourself, but that’s not something I want to see.
