Horseback ride to help fight cancer
SAN LUIS, Ariz. — People who love horses and horseback riding are invited to mount up Saturday morning against cancer.
Horse aficionados in south Yuma County are staging the second annual Cabalgata Contra el Cancer, a fundraising horseback ride that benefits families in the area whose loved ones are battling the disease.
The ride is scheduled to leave San Luis at 10 a.m. and end in Somerton, where a party with live music will follow.
And the ride is not limited to people on horses. It’s open to those with motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles who pay the $20 fee to participate.
Participants in the ride organized by the Vaqueros del Valle equestrian group and San Luis resident Coral Mendez will gather in the staging area located at Mendez Street and Avenue 10. The ride will proceed in a northeasterly direction to the Ochoa family ranch at 3282 W. County 18th St., where post-ride entertainment will follow.
Performing will be the San Luis band Salmar, DJ Andy, the Gadsden Elementary School District folkloric dance group and vocalist Coral Alonso.
Mendez said organizers hope to raise enough funds to help at least two families with members struggling against cancer.
Participants in the ride are urged to wear white or pink as a show of support for those battling cancer.
Registration for the ride will take place prior to the 10 a.m. kickoff at the staging site.
