3 Shamrocks place in Div. IV; Cibola 5th in Div. I after day 1

Three Yuma Catholic wrestlers placed top-six on the final day of the Division IV state tournament at Prescott Valley Event Center on Friday.

Freshman Jose Macias was the highest placer for the Shamrocks, taking fourth at 138 pounds after getting pinned by Willcox’s Kelby Flowers in the thirdplace match.

Junior Miguel Loya placed fifth at 120 pounds, pinning Round Valley’s Morgan Orona in the fifth-place match.

Sophomore Aden Cain placed sixth at 132 pounds, losing a 7-0 decision to Santa Cruz Valley’s Roy Sullivan in the fifthplace match.

Yuma Catholic finished 18th as a team with 39.5 points.

Raiders in 5th in Div. I

The Cibola wrestling team is in fifth place after day one of the Division I state tournament at Prescott Valley Event Center.

The Raiders had four wrestlers go 2-0 on Friday, and three others are still alive in the consolatio­n bracket.

Freshman Demarko Gomez (106 pounds), sophomore Juan Sierra (113), junior Zeke Guerrero (152) and sophomore Liam Hoffmeyer (182) will all wrestle in the semifinals today, and are guaranteed of placing after going 2-0 on Friday.

Junior Sebastian Valencia (160), junior Marcos Meza (220) and junior Ben Torres (132) each went 1-1 on Friday. Valencia and Meza both won in the first round before losing in the quarterfin­als, while Torres lost in the first round before winning his first consolatio­n match.

Cibola has 43 points as a team, trailing first-place Liberty (96), second-place Mountain View Mesa (68), third-place Desert Vista (62) and fourth-place Hamilton (56).

Alonso reaches semis for Kofa

Led by senior 126-pounder Isai Alonso, the Kofa wrestling team is in 14th place with 28.5 points after day one of the Division I state tournament.

Alonso went 2-0 on Friday to reach today’s semifinals.

All seven Kings who qualified for state are still alive after day one, as the other six each went 1-1 on Friday.

Junior Anthony Morales (152) and senior Carlos Urias (160) both won their first-round matches before falling in the quarterfin­als, while freshman Julian Ayala (113), junior Raul Aispuro (120), senior Matthew Castro (138) and senior Daniel Rios Morales (145) all lost in the first round but bounced back with consolatio­n wins.

Vega goes 1-1 for San Luis

San Luis’ lone wrestler at the Division I state tournament — sophomore Janthony Vega (106) — is still alive after going 1-1 on Friday. Vega won his first-round match before falling in the quarterfin­als.

GR’s Moreno, Antelope’s Reyes don’t place

After going 2-1 on Thursday, Gila Ridge junior 126-pounder Ty Moreno (Division III) and Antelope junior 106-pounder Kristopher Reyes (Division IV) exited their respective tournament­s after losing their first match Friday.
