AWC men’s basketball gets 20th win
The Arizona Western women’s basketball team used a crazy finish to beat Phoenix College, 64-63, on Saturday in Phoenix. After Phoenix’s Ava Rauschen hit two free throws with 1.7 seconds remaining to put the Bears up 63-62, AWC’s Mone Izumi was fouled with 0.3 on the clock. Izumi hit both of her free throws to win it for the Matadors. Mar Ibern led AWC (11-16 overall, 9-10 ACCAC) with 19 points, while Izumi had 11 and Kayla Rubio had 10.
JUCO MEN’S BASKETBALL AWC 99, Phoenix 89
Alfonso Plummer poured in 29 points on 10 of 19 shooting (6 of 14 from 3) for the Matadors (20-7 overall, 14-5 ACCAC), who picked up their fourth straight win. Bryson Langdon added 19 points and five assists, Cash Williams had 12 points and eight assists, and Abderrahmane Hailouf had eight points and 11 rebounds.
JUCO SOFTBALL AWC sweeps Paradise Valley
The Arizona Western softball team swept Paradise Valley in Phoenix on Saturday, winning game one of the doubleheader 13-4 and game two 14-0.
In game one, Andrea Cline went 3-for-4 with one RBI, Chloe Garcia went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs, Aylin Campa and Allie Tito both went 2-for-3 with one RBI, and Sabrina Garcia went 2-for4.
Koryne Coddington went all five innings in game one, striking out seven while allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk.
In game two, Cline (HR,
4 RBIs), Cassandra Valle (HR, 3 RBIs) and Azalea Moore (2 RBIs) each had three hits, while Michelle Roldan (1 RBI) and Nicole Moran each had two his. Campa went 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
Sarah Velasquez earned the win in game two, allowing just one hit over four innings.
With the sweep, AWC improved to 15-1 overall and 6-0 ACCAC.
JUCO BASEBALL Matadors split against Pima
The Arizona Western baseball team split a home doubleheader against Pima on Saturday, dropping game one 5-2 before winning game two 4-2.
In game one, the Matadors led 2-0 after six innings
before the Aztecs exploded for five runs off AWC’s Ramon Miranda in the seventh. That spoiled a quality start from Chris Koeiman, who allowed just four hits over six shutout innings.
Zach Huffins led AWC’s offense in game one with two of the team’s six hits.
The Matadors (9-4 overall, 1-1 ACCAC) bounced back in game two behind the arm of Gabriel Ponce, who pitched five shutout innings with five hits allowed and seven strikeouts. Robert Gonzalez pitched the final four innings to collect the save, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out six.
Huffins again was the only Matador with multiple hits in game two, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs.
