Reetika Dhawan
Arizona Western College Dean of Career and Technical Education Reetika Dhawan was one of 18 faculty members selected from HispanicServing Institutions (HSIs) to participate in the 2019 U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) E. Kika de La Garza Fellowship program this summer. The program offers first-hand experiences in policymaking and research at USDA and other federal agencies. Educators will meet with representatives of USDA and other federal agencies such as the Department of Education, NASA, and the National Science Foundation.
The two-week fellowship was held from June 17-28 in Washington, D.C.
Dahwei Chang
Arizona Western College Professor of Mathematics Dahwei Chang was selected to participate in a U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Summer Research Team at the Arctic Domain Awareness Center in Anchorage, Alaska. He is studying with the Mechanical Engineering Department of University of Alaska, Anchorage on the safety of traveling through sea ice in the Arctic region. The 10-week program began on May 24 and will run until Aug. 2. At the end of the program, Chang will travel to Arlington, Va., to participate in a three-day DHS Center of Excellence Summit. The purpose of this program is to increase and enhance the scientific leadership at minority serving institutions.
Chang will be a Professor of Physics at AWC starting fall 2019.
Elia Juarez
Elia Juarez, teen services manager at the Main Library, has been chosen as the Yuma County Library District’s employee of the month for June. This award recognizes an employee that inspires with their efforts and attitude.
She received a mounted certificate, a nameplate in the book of her choice, an employee of the month pin, and her photo will be hung at the Main Library during the month of June.
