Trump’s press secretary has Yuma ties
Stephanie Grisham was Sun staffer in late ’90s
Yuma has an interesting connection to the White House in Stephanie Grisham, President Trump’s new press secretary.
Grisham lived in Yuma from 1997 to 1999, part of that time spent working at the Yuma Sun.
And though she didn’t stay long — working at the Sun less than a year around 1998, according to Yuma Sun records — she filled a variety of roles, including as a receptionist and in the classified and accounting departments.
Grisham lived in Yuma with her then-husband, Dan Marries, who during the late ’90s worked at TV station KYMA as an anchor. Marries currently anchors the evening news show at KOLD in Tucson, and confirmed Grisham’s connection to both Yuma and the Yuma Sun.
Regarding Grisham’s new position, Marries told the Yuma Sun, “I’m happy for her and wish her success.”
Beginning her role as Trump’s press secretary at the beginning of July, Grisham replaced Sarah Huckabee-Sanders, who had served in the role for two years after the departure of Sean Spicer.
Before taking the job, she had worked as First Lady Melania Trump’s press secretary, and previous to that had been deputy press secretary under Spicer during the early days of the Trump presidency. She also worked as a press aide for Trump’s campaign.
Grisham was also involved in Arizona politics, serving as a spokeswoman for Attorney General Tom Horne and the Republican caucus of the Arizona House of Representatives.
During the short time she has held her new position, Grisham has already made headlines, most no
tably for getting into a reported “scuffle” with North Korean security during Trump’s historic visit to the Demilitarized Zone to
meet with Kim Jong-Un.
A video of the altercation published on the BBC’s website shows Grisham struggling to push North Korean security aside in order to allow photographers into the meeting.
