Gosar presents service appreciation award to YPD Sgt. Raul Fiveash
U.S. Congressman Paul Gosar’s office surprised Yuma Police Sgt. Raul Fiveash with an award presented Wednesday before the mayor and council.
Fiveash received the law enforcement appreciation award for “outstanding service and lasting contribution to the City of Yuma residents.”
Penny Pew, Gosar’s district director, noted that each year Gosar recognizes members of law enforcement. This year Gosar’s office asked the Yuma Police Department for a submission.
The department nominated Fiveash, a 23-year veteran of the Marine Corps who enlisted in Farmington, New Mexico, in 1992 and retired in 2006 with the rank of chief warrant officer 3.
Fiveash joined the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office that same year. He attended the police academy in Tucson and was selected as president of his class.
After two years with YCSO, YPD hired him in 2008. Fiveash has been with the YPD for 11 years, serving as a recruit training officer, corporal and patrol sergeant. He currently serves in the Investigation Division, with the rank of detective sergeant.
Fiveash also is a mental health coordinator for YPD. He is certified as a mental health first-aid instructor and has completed all requirements for a crisis intervention team supervisor.
He also serves as secretary on the board of directors of Horizon Health and Wellness.
In a social media post, the City of Yuma wrote: “For the last three years, Sgt. Fiveash has served as the mental health liaison on behalf of the police department, tirelessly dedicating himself to partner with local and state mental health providers to boost collaboration in our area, and to promote how the police department can better serve citizens and assist those with mental health issues.”
