Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

-

• Thumbs up to Chris Wheeler and Prison Hill Brewing Company. Wheeler recently launched a new brew, Hazy Krizayzy, all proceeds of which will go toward swim lessons for kids in Yuma County to help prevent drownings. To donate to the fund, contact Wheeler at Prison Hill, 928-276-4001. • Thumbs up to those who supported the Back to School Rodeo at the Yuma Civic Center! What a terrific way to get information and supplies, just in time to kick off the new school year!

• Thumbs up to Yuma County Juvenile Justice Center Director Tim Hardy, who has been honored with the Gabe Zimmerman Public Service award by the Center for the Future of Arizona. Hardy was selected for his commitment to improving civic health and community connections! Congrats, Hardy! • Thumbs up to the Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents working near Morelos Dam who rescued a father and son after the pair were swept away in a canal.

• Thumbs up to Yuma icon Bob Lutes, who was recently honored with the Spirit of Service Award at the Arizona Governor’s Conference on Tourism. What an amazing honor!

• Thumbs down to the Trump campaign for mocking efforts to reduce plastic straw consumption by selling plastic “Trump Straws.” Being environmentally conscious shouldn’t be a “liberal vs. conservative” situation — it should simply mean being good to our planet, regardless of one’s politics.

• Thumbs down to monsoon humidity. One forgets just how draining that is until it hits once again!

• Thumbs down to the Museum Fire burning near Flagstaff. According to the Associated Press, the wildfire has grown slightly and is burning in rugged terrain, making it a challenge to fight. Around 670 people are fighting the fire — we hope they stay safe as they get this wildfire under control.

Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down are compiled by the Yuma Sun editorial board, based on recent events, happenings and activities around Yuma County and the nation, and will appear on Fridays in the Yuma Sun.
