Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

-

• Thumbs up to Jax, the canine officer at the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office. Jax assisted in two separate traffic stops that led to the discovery of more than $5 million in illegal drugs in Yuma County. What a good dog!

• Thumbs up to the newly sworn-in Court Appointed Special Advocates, who act as the voice of the children going through Yuma County’s foster care system. It’s not an easy job, and it’s all volunteerbased. Thank you for stepping up to help foster children!

• Thumbs up to the Crane School District and the City of Yuma, for the plan to install 16 flashing speed zone beacons around nine schools. Three crosswalks will also be upgraded. The changes will happen near Salida Del Sol Elementary, Rancho Viejo Elementary, HL Suverkrup Elementary, Ronald Reagan Elementary, Valley Horizon Elementary, Pueblo Elementary, Centennial Middle School, Cibola High, and Desert View Academy. Hopefully the changes improve safety near these schools, and slow drivers down!

• Thumbs up to Egan Bernal of Colombia, who won an action-packed Tour de France. He’s the youngest post-World War II champion, and the first from South America, the Associated Press reports. Congrats to Bernal!

• Thumbs up to the Yuma Regional Communications System, which recently received nearly $700,000 for the county’s 911 system from the state’s emergency telecommunication services revolving fund. The grant will cover costs for equipment and services.

• Thumbs down to the shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California. Once again, a shooter struck in a public place, and three people lost their lives, and 12 others were injured. The Gilroy shooting came one day after a shooting claimed a life during a Brooklyn community festival. It’s heartbreaking, and it has to stop.

• Thumbs down to the Capitol One data breach case. What’s in your wallet? Apparently, a hacker, and approximately 100 million people have been impacted by it.

Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down are compiled by the Yuma Sun editorial board, based on recent events, happenings and activities around Yuma County and the nation, and will appear on Fridays in the Yuma Sun.
