San Luis library seeks art for ‘Mi Mexico Diverso’
The library in San Luis, Ariz., is inviting area artists to show their work in a month-long exhibit that will honor Hispanic heritage.
Artists of all ages and skill levels, working in all mediums, are invited to take part in “Origins: Mi Mexico Diverso,” scheduled for unveiling Sept. 12 at the Yuma County Library District’s San Luis branch, 1075 N. 6th Ave.
Arizona Western College, the Regional Museum of San Luis Rio Colorado, Son., and the Mexican Consulate in Yuma are joining with the library in presenting the display that coincides with the nationwide observance of Hispanic Heritage Month.
“It’s non-juried,” said Megan Baird, manager of the San Luis library, “and it’s dedicated to promoting visual artists from both sides of the border. The exhibition is designed to build bridges between artists and our community.”
The aim of this year’s exhibit is to showcase the diversity of Mexico, its people, geography and its culture, although Baird said artists are not required to strictly adhere to that theme.
However, submitted art must be suitable for viewing by people of all ages, must have been created within the last two years, and cannot have appeared in prior years of the exhibit.
Artists working in painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, ceramics, glass, digital media and mixed media are all welcome to submit art. There is no cost to enter artwork.
Baird said she would like to see at least 60 entries. “As many as possible is my general philosophy.”
This year the library hopes to have enough submissions to display the art not only in the lobby but throughout the premises, she said.
The public will be able to see the artwork during the library’s regular business hours: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Artists wishing to display their work can register on the library’s website, www.yumalibrary.org, or in person at the San Luis library. Sept. 6 at 5 p.m. is the deadline for them to deliver their work to the library.
“Origins: Mi Mexico Diverso” will remain on display through Oct. 17, and artists will have until the following day at 5 p.m. to pick up their work.
This will be the sixth year the San Luis library has hosted the “Origins” exhibit as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month observance.
The exhibit for 2017 earned the library an Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties.
