Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

-

• Thumbs up to the Gadsden Elementary School District, which is now offering a farmer’s market program to encourage students to try healthier food options! It’s a great idea, and one we hope is successful!

• A big thumbs up to the Gila Ridge High School varsity football team, for its 8-0 record so far this season! It’s a new school record – and we hope they take it to a perfect season! Best of luck to the Hawks!

• Thumbs up to Sunrise Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Association and the artists at Black Filigree Tattoo, for the new art and murals decorating the campus! The encouraging quotes, graphics and murals are intended to boost students’ self-esteem and inspire them to achieve goals. It’s a great project, and one that would be terrific in more Yuma County schools!

• Thumbs up to Yuma Mayor Doug Nicholls for hosting neighborhood meetings throughout the community. The goal is to give residents a chance to ask questions, discuss ways to make the community better, and have one-on-one conversations with the mayor. Any steps to open communication lines between elected officials and the community are positive steps in the right direction!

• Thumbs down to the persons responsible for removing candidate campaign signs in Yuma and replacing them with another candidate’s signs – an action that wasn’t authorized by any of the candidates. Be respectful, and leave the campaign signs alone.

• Thumbs down to the flu. Early indicators point to a potentially tough flu season, and it’s rapidly approaching. If you haven’t gotten your flu shot, consider doing so quickly. It takes about two weeks to be fully effective.

• Thumbs down to people who place giant, complex orders at fast food drive-thrus, automatically killing the “fast” part of process. If your order is especially big or complicated, organize it ahead of time or go inside, so people trying to grab food quickly can do so in the drive-thru line.

Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down are compiled by the Yuma Sun editorial board, based on recent events, happenings and activities around Yuma County and the nation, and will appear on Fridays in the Yuma Sun.
