Which sweet is the best for trick or treat?

Reese’s, Skittles purchases fall in line with national survey

- Roxanne Molenar Editor’s Notebook

Do you remember trick-or-treating as a kid? It was so much fun to go from house to house, gathering a little bag of treats. Then we would rush home, dump out all the candy, and sort it out into rankings of most tasty to least tasty.

My cousins were sometimes my trick-or-treat accomplices when I was in elementary school, and there was a LOT of negotiating during this time. “I offer you two Kit-Kats for one bag of M&Ms. … No? What if I throw in a lollipop?”

Of course, there were always a few tricks to be found in the candy that none of us wanted.

For me, it was Good & Plenty candy. I’m fairly convinced my mom’s friends passed that business out as a favor to her. She swooped in on my candy as if she knew they would be there. She loves them and I despise them, so there was no negotiating needed.

A new survey by Monmouth University recently looked at the top eight selling candies for Halloween this year, and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups were tops in the country.

That’s some candy I can 100% support.

CNN reports that 36% favor the cups, while 18% favor Snickers, the second-place winner. Third place went to M&Ms, with 11% of the vote. Five other candies received 6% or less, including Hershey bars, Skittles, Starburst and Tootsie Pops.

My candy shopping this year fell in line with this survey. I bought Reeses and Skittles – two candies that my family enjoys. Then I also picked up a bag of different types of SweetTarts, because yum. Sometimes you just need a little sour with the sweet!

Of course, my Halloween purchases are based on what we will eat, on the off-chance that there are leftovers. And that is a hard thing to predict. Some years, I’ve gone through 800 pieces of candy, and other years, we barely dented a bag.

Whether my house is flooded with trick-or-treaters or not, we’re ready. And I’m ready to eat those leftovers, too!
