Yuma Sun on quest to find businesses that have stood test of time
There are some amazing businesses and entities that have been around for generations here in Yuma County.
As far as we can tell, the Yuma Sun appears to be the oldest business here, established in 1872 with the Arizona Sentinel.
The Yuma County Chamber of Commerce, established in 1905, appears to be next in line, at 114 years old, followed by Johnson Mortuary in 1907, making it 112 years old.
The Yuma International Airport (1928), The Coronado Hotel (1938), Lutes Casino (1940), AEA Federal Credit Union (1942) and Mitchell’s Merchant Patrol (1943) are all high on the list, too.
And it appears that 1946 was a solid year to establish a business. Lines & Lundgreen, the Yuma School of Beauty and Brownies Restaurant all started then, and now have 73 years under their belts, while B&H Refrigeration is nipping at their heels with 72 years of business.
Fishers Landing Resort was established in 1948, followed by El Charro Mexican Food in 1949, Yuma Golf and Country Club in 1950, Hansberger Refrigeration in 1952, Spragues Sports and Yuma Furniture in 1956, and Yuma Regional Medical Center in 1958.
That decade closed out with Liberty Motorsports, Crossroads Mission and Economy Muffler all opening in 1959.
The 1960s brought us Mr. G’s Drive in (1962), Reliable Auto (1964), Dicks Auto Rebuilders (1965), Westerner Products (1966), G&T Alarm (1969) and Accurate Automotive Attention (1969).
It’s a tremendous honor to be in business for 50 years or more, a testament to customer service and community dedication.
But here’s the question, readers: what businesses are we missing? There are family farms, for example, that have been in operation for generations, and we would love to include them on this list.
If your business should be included on this list, please send me an email at editor@yumasun.com!
And to each of these businesses, congratulations!
