City seeks to fill commission vacancies

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

Yuma’s Clean and Beautiful Commission has some big shoes to fill, and the city is looking for volunteers to help fill them, as well as openings on other volunteer boards.

The recent resignations of commissioners Linda Collins and Mary Ann Easterday leave two openings on the Clean and Beautiful Commission, which works with the city’s Public Works Department. Together with former chairman David Psolka, who resigned in December 2017, the commission is losing a combined 23 years of service.

“The city’s appreciation goes to Mary Ann, Linda and David for their determination of going above and beyond,” said Joel Olea, director of public works. “They are concluding their service to the commission with many accomplishments. Together they have championed many popular community projects, including the implementation of the city’s curbside recycling program. They also were tremendous advocates for programs such as Household Hazardous Waste, Neighbor Helping Neighbor, Adopt-a-Street, and our Report-a-Shopping Cart Program. They also advocated for the new ‘Welcome to Yuma’ signs.

“This group has exemplified what the City Council envisions for our volunteer commissions: to be proactive and engaging so as to improve our community.”

Clean and Beautiful Commission duties, as described in the City Code, are to initiate, develop, promote and assist in the implementation of community beautification.

“This vague description allowed the members to think outside the box of our traditional recognition program,” Olea stated. “I’m very proud to have Public

Works serve as the commission liaison. Together we truly accomplished a great deal of projects that impacted our community in a positive way.”

The two positions on the Clean and Beautiful Commission are open for applications now. Other board vacancies include:

• Building Advisory Board - 2 vacancies (citizen and mechanical contractor)

• Design and Historic Review Commission - 1 vacancy

• Merit System Board - 1 vacancy

• Parks, Arts, and Recreation Commission - 2 vacancies

• Residential Advisory Board - 1 vacancy (general contractor)

• Workers’ Compensation Trust Board - 3 vacancies

• Yuma Fire Public Safety Board - 1 vacancy

• Yuma Public Safety Police Board - 1 vacancy

Any person who lives within Yuma’s city limits may serve on a board or commission. Several boards of a more technical nature require one or more members to have specific technical expertise. In order to be considered for a board or commission, a Boards and Commissions application must be filed in the City Clerk’s Office.
