Tucson police fatally shoot man in standoff; woman later found dead

TUCSON — A man has been fatally shot by Tucson police after a long standoff at an apartment and a woman was later found dead inside.

Police haven’t released the names of the man and woman yet.

They say the man in his early 40s barricaded himself in a north Tucson apartment and shot several rounds during a 6-hour standoff Saturday night.

When officers later entered the apartment, they found a woman in her late 30s dead.

Police say officers responded to the apartment after reports of an aggravated assault.

They say the man fired several rounds while inside the apartment, then walked out around 8:30 p.m. with the gun in hand.

SWAT officers then shot and killed the suspect.

Phoenix man accused of fatally stabbing mom after argument

PHOENIX — Police say a Phoenix man has been arrested for allegedly killing his mother after an argument about the family dog.

They say 47-year-old Terry Driescher Jr. was taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Driescher is accused of fatally stabbing his 68-yearold mother in the driveway of their home around 10 a.m. Saturday.

The woman was taken to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Her name hasn’t been released yet by police.

Phoenix police tried to talk to Driescher after he retreated into the home and later called SWAT to serve a search warrant.

Plane wreckage, body found in rural eastern Yavapai County

CAMP VERDE — Authoritie­s are investigat­ing a plane crash discovered when a rancher found wreckage in a rural area of eastern Yavapai County.

A rancher on Friday reported finding the wreckage of a single-engine plane and a body at the crash site southeast of the junction of Interstate 17 and State Route 169, the county Sheriff’s Office said Saturday.

The remains weren’t immediatel­y identified but the rancher described the crash wreckage as apparently a “couple of days old,” the Sheriff’’s Office said.
