Christmas Eve shooting suspect appears in court
A man suspected of shooting a woman on Christmas Eve was arrested after a short standoff with Yuma police the following day, the department has reported.
According to information provided by Lt. Scott Legros, at approximately 4:41 p.m. on Christmas Day officers responded to a residence in the 4100 block of W. 21st Place, where 33-year-old Martin Alberto Ochoa was eventually taken into custody.
He was booked into the Yuma County Adult Detention Facility on charges of misconduct with weapons and possession of a weapon by a prohibited possessor.
Ochoa made his initial appearance in Yuma Justice Court on Thursday before Justice of the Peace Juan Guerrero, who informed him of the charges against him and ordered his bond be set as a $25,000 cash-only bond.
Guerrero also informed Ochoa that he is scheduled to return to court on Monday, at which time he would be informed if a criminal complaint had been filed against him and what, if any, offenses he is being charged with.
On Tuesday, Yuma police responded to a report of shots fired in the 2300 block of South Carol Avenue at 4:12 p.m.
Once on scene officers found a woman who had been shot inside her home. She was transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
This incident is still under investigation.
