City working to control sewer odors in growing San Luis east side subdivisions

- BY CESAR NEYOY

San Luis, Ariz.– Growth on this city’s east side has prompted City Hall to take steps to minimize sewer odors that come with development of new residential subdivisions.

The City Council recently awarded a contract for $78,610 with Globe Sampson Associates to install an odor control system at a sewer lift station on County 24th Street between Avenues

E and F.

The lift station serves or will serve several new or planned developments on the east side, including the recently developed ninth section of Bienestar Estates, the three phases of the Santa Cecelia subdivision and various commercial and industrial projects.

The city public works department had recommended the purchase of Globe Sampson’s EcoVerde EGMini Skid Odor Control

System. Public Works Director Eulogio Vera said the system is energy-efficient and requires limited maintenance. He said the department saw the same system in operation in two other cities in the area before recommending it to the council for purchase.

He said the installation is necessary, given the added volume of sewage passing through the station, not only from residences on the east side but the west side.

In 2017, the city connected west side residences to the east side treatment plant to reduce the burden of the plant on the west end.

The city previously installed an odor control system at a lift station on the west side to reduce complaints then about foul smells.

“More and more people are coming to live (on the east side) and we need a system like this,” Mayor Gerardo Sanchez said.
