From Sunday, Jan. 19. through Saturday, Jan. 25, Rural/Metro Fire Department, Yuma Operations, responded to 289 calls for service.

• 2 Fire Responses Including: 1 fifth wheel on fire including a vehicle and one false alarm

• 23 Motor Vehicle Accidents Including: 5 two vehicle accidents including one head on collision and 1 four patient t-bone accident

• 226 Emergency Medical Assignments Including: 37 falls, 28 for breathing problems, 20 injured persons, 9 for abdominal pain, 8 for air ambulance assistance, 8 for altered or decreased levels of consciousness, 8 for chest pain, 6 stroke patients, 6 for syncope (fainting), 4 for convulsions/seizures, 4 for diabetic problems, 4 medical alarms, 3 for hemorrhage/lacerations, 3 for back pain, 3 unconscious patients, 3 for cardiac arrest, 3 behavioral emergencies, 1 assault, 1 for choking, 1 for heart problems, 1 man down, 1 overdose/ poisoning, 1 gunshot wound and other alarms

• 16 Mutual Aid Requests Including: 6 EMS calls for AMR Imperial County, 6 EMS calls for Yuma Fire Department, 2 EMS call for YPG, 1 EMS call for Wellton Fire/Tri-Valley and 1 fire for El Centro Fire Department

• 22 Special Duty, Still Assignments and Public Aid Including: 12 lift assists, 1 cat stuck in a tree (thank you San Luis Fire Department for the assist with your ladder truck), 1 for smell of gas in the air, 1 vehicle on fire and other alarms.

Safety Tips for Recognizing Stroke Symptoms:

Every year 795,000 Americans experience a stroke – nearly 130,000 do not survive. Early recognition, quick intervention and emergency treatments can help stop brain damage and disability that often follow a stroke. If you suspect someone is suffering from a stroke act F.A.S.T. Face – Ask the person to smile, does one side droop? Arms – Ask the person to raise both arms, does on arm drift downward? Speech – Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence, does their speech sound slurred or strange? Time – If you observe any of these signs call 911 immediately.
