Arizona reports 233 new virus cases, 6 more known deaths
PHOENIX — Arizona health officials are reporting six more known deaths from the coronavirus outbreak with 233 new cases of COVID-19.
The number of cases statewide as of early Monday has increased to 14,170 with the number of coronavirus deaths now at 686.
The latest numbers come the weekend after the Arizona Department of Health Services began a two-week extension of a “testing blitz” for COVID-19. The extension started on Saturday with more than 70 sites in at least nine counties participating in the weekend event.
Decomposed body found under Salt River bridge near airport
PHOENIX — A decomposed body has been found under a Salt River bridge near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, according to authorities.
Phoenix police said officers got the call Monday and the body was located under a bridge near where Interstate 10 crosses the Salt River south of Sky Harbor.
It’s unclear how long the body had been at the spot and police said they’re handling it as an unknown death investigation.
No other details were immediately released.
Authorities identify man found dead on a street in Tolleson
TOLLESON — Authorities still are investigating the death of a man whose body was found on a street in Tolleson, west of Phoenix.
Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a scene around 2 a.m. Sunday.
They said the man had an injury and he was pronounced dead on the scene.
He was later identified as 26-year-old Salvatore Barone.
The sheriff’s homicide unit arrived on scene and took over the investigation.
Sheriff’s officials haven’t released any information on how Barone died or if there are any suspects in the case yet.
