Phoenix police release more video of man’s fatal shooting
PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department on Monday released bodycamera videos of the moments before a man was fatally shot by officers while he was sitting in a parked car in a driveway.
The video appears to show a police officer yelling multiple times that he’ll shoot if 28-year-old James “Jay” Garcia lifts the gun he’s holding.
The department initially released video of the aftermath of the July 4 shooting, but didn’t show what preceded it until now.
Police were called to a home in Phoenix’s Maryvale neighborhood about a suspect in an attempted stabbing case.
Officers spoke with Garcia and commanded him to get out of the car.
Garcia allegedly rolled up the window and police said he brandished a handgun and allegedly told an officer to shoot him.
When Garcia refused to lower the weapon, an officer broke a window as a distraction and two other officers opened fire.
Garcia was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams has asked the FBI to conduct an independent probe of the incident to determine if Garcia’s civil rights were violated.
Man dies, woman seriously wounded in south Phoenix shooting
PHOENIX — A shooting at a south Phoenix apartment complex has left a man dead and woman hospitalized in serious condition, police said Monday.
They said an unidentified man fired a gun several times during an argument with 36-year-old Cedric Louis Springfield on Sunday night.
Springfield and a 61-year-old woman were struck by the gunfire and both were taken to a hospital.
Police said Springfield later died, but the woman was expected to survive. Her name hasn’t been released.
Police said it’s unclear if Springfield knew the suspect or what started the argument.
