Quick Hitters Bowden thanks doctors, fans after ‘tough’ bout with virus

Former Florida state football coach bobby bowden thanked his doctors, family and fans their support and prayers through his “tough” bout with cOVId-19.

“I want to thank all the many many people who were thinking of and praying for me over the last few weeks,” bowden said Wednesday in a statement released by his son, former clemson coach Tommy bowden. “I just went through a battle with cOVId-19 and God just wasn’t ready to take me home yet to be with him.

“Most of you know I’m 91 years old and the fight was tough but thanks to the help of dr. Michael Forsthoefe­l, and the support of (wife) ann and all my children, I beat it,” bowden said in his first public statement since being released from the hospital last week.

bowden was hospitaliz­ed Oct. 6, three days after testing positive for cOVId-19. he had received word of the positive test a few days after returning to his Tallahasse­e home from a lengthy stay at a hospital and rehab facility where he was treated for an infection in his leg.

bowden coached Florida state for 34 years and is second on the career victories list in major college football with 357, behind only the late Joe Paterno of Penn state. his teams won national championsh­ips in 1993 and 1999.

“I’ve had a chance to to get a lot of wins in my life, but I really wanted to win this one because I wanted to be around to vote for President Trump,” bowden said.

Capitals hire McCarthy as assistant, re-sign Siegenthal­er

arLINGTON, Va. – Kevin Mccarthy joined Peter Laviolette’s Washington capitals coaching staff Wednesday, and the team re-signed one of the defensemen he’ll be working with.

Jonas siegenthal­er signed a one-year contract worth $800,000, a deal that should finalize Washington’s blue line. Mccarthy will be in charge of defensemen under Laviolette, who is keeping the other three assistants in place after replacing fired coach Todd reirden.

Merritt Norvell, first Black AD at Michigan State, has died

easT LaNsING, Mich. – Merritt Norvell Jr., the first black athletic director at Michigan state, has died. he was 79.

a spokesman at the university of Nevada confirmed Wednesday that football coach Jay Norvell, who is Merritt Norvell’s son, took some time away from the team because of his father’s death. he left reno on Monday to go to Michigan and was expected back either Wednesday night or Thursday morning.

Norvell was appointed to Michigan state’s ad spot in 1995 and served until 1999.

“The thoughts of the entire Michigan state athletics family are with the family and friends of Merritt Norvell,” said bill beekman, Michigan state’s current ad, in a statement. “beyond his contributi­ons at Michigan state, his impact was felt across college athletics, including at the national level. Over the last couple days, I’ve been particular­ly impressed with the number of athletic directors I’ve heard from who were impacted by his mentorship.”

Michigan state reached the Final Four in volleyball, hockey and men’s basketball during Norvell’s tenure.
