‘Treat’ awaits at Cocopah Speedway

$1,000 prize up for grabs on Halloween night

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

This is not a trick, but it will sure be a treat for one driver if he or she can take home the win in the showcase event Halloween night at Cocopah Speedway.

A $1,000 check is waiting for anyone who can outrun a field of 25 cars in the IMCA Modified Division on Saturday at the Diamond in the Desert.

“The temperatures are getting cooler and the racing is getting hotter,” said Brad Whitfield, Cocopah Speedway’s general manager.

“This will be a great momentum builder as we get one race closer to the Deacon Dick Memorial (Nov. 6-7).”

Along with the 928X Motorsports IMCA Modifieds, Saturday night’s show will also include the Yuma Insurance IMCA Sport Modifieds, Alexander Ford IMCA Hobby Stocks, Richard’s Foothills Auto

IMCA Sport Compacts and the Red Eye Radiator Mini Dwarfs.

The first green flag flies at 7 p.m.

It goes without saying that if Mesa’s Chaz Baca pulls up at the pit window Saturday night, he will be the odds-on favorite to pocket the big IMCA Modifieds pay check. Baca has won six feature events so far at the Somerton oval, and came to close to making it seven two weeks ago but settled for second place behind Brawley’s Russell Allen.

That performance by Allen makes him one of the front runners too, as the driver from the Imperial Valley feels right at home at Cocopah Speedway, having won his share of feature events there over the years.

Fans should also keep an eye out for Pahrump, Nev., driver Kollin Hibdon, who just turned 17 years old but drives like a seasoned veteran. He also has a feature event win at Cocopah Speedway under his belt and has been a top contender in others.

On the Sport Modified level, Holtville’s Chris

Toth is on a roll, having won five feature events.

In Hobby Stock action, Yuma’s Jim Robinson has a two-race winning streak that he no doubt would like to see reach three in a row.

And on the Sport Compact scene, it’s turned into a Frank Cordova vs. Darren Sage Show, with Cordova having won five feature events in 2020 and Sage having won four. That’s nine feature events, and there have only been 10.

Cocopah Speedway is located at 3450 E. County 15th Street.
