Quick Hitters Djokovic crushed by Sonego in Vienna quarters

Novak Djokovic lost for only the third time this year after a listless effort in the Erste Bank Open quarterfinals and walked away happy on Friday.

The top-ranked Djokovic lost his first meeting with 42nd-ranked Lorenzo Sonego of Italy 6-2, 6-1.

He lacked power in his groundstrokes and produced a string of mistakes. He fell 4-0 behind, and won just five points on Sonego’s serve in the opening set.

In the second, Djokovic missed all six break points before conceding his service game for a fifth time when Sonego closed out the win with a passing shot.

AJ Hinch takes over as Tigers manager

As he waited out his suspension this year, AJ Hinch knew he wanted to return to baseball. The question was whether anyone in the sport would be ready to welcome him.

His answer came pretty quickly.

“About 30 minutes after the World Series’ last out, my phone rang,” Hinch said.

It was Detroit general manager Al Avila, telling Hinch to get on a plane. The Tigers quickly hired Hinch as their new manager, giving him a chance to return to a major league dugout after he was fired by Houston in the wake of the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal.

Trent Brown returns to practice for Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders activated right tackle Trent Brown from the COVID-19 list and could have him available a week after he missed a game because of a positive coronavirus test.

Brown took part in his first practice Friday since being sidelined on Oct. 21 because of the positive test. Brown’s test also forced the Raiders to practice all last week without the starting offensive line because of “high risk” close contacts with Brown.

The other starters returned in time to play last Sunday but Brown remained sidelined until Friday. His status for Sunday’s game in Cleveland has not been determined.

Fighting cancer, John Daly shares Champions lead

Playing his fourth event since revealing he’s fighting bladder cancer, John Daly shot an 8-under 64 on Friday for a share of the lead with Jim Furyk in the PGA Tour Champions’ TimberTech Champions.

Daly had his lowest score in his five-year career on the 50-and-over tour. The two-time major champion won his lone Champions title in 2017 in Houston.

Daly eagled the par-5 18th — hitting a 7-iron to 12 feet — for a first-nine 31 on The Old Course at Broken Sound. He finished the round with a bogey on the par-4 ninth.
