NOVEMBER GARDENING ACTIVITIES

• National Garden Club Poetry Contest – Open to grades K-9. The poem can be any style the student wishes to write. The title is “Exploring Backyard Mysteries”. Entries must be typed and titled and include: student’s name, address, age, grade and name of school. Also include: Pecan Grove Garden Club and Arizona Federation of Garden Clubs. Deadline to send entries to Marlena Parrot is Nov. 13.

• National Garden Club Essay Contest – Open to grades 9-12. The essay title is “Adapting our Actions to Protect our Natural Habitats”. Length must be 600-700 words. Entries must be typed and titled. A cover page should include a wallet-size photo (optional), the student’s name, grade, address, phone number, school name, list of activities, and Pecan Grove Garden Club as the sponsoring club. Deadline to send entries to Marlena Parrot is Dec. 4. A $100 cash award goes to the local winning essay which will move on to the state contest.

• National Garden Club Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl Poster Contest – Open to grades 1-5. Smokey Bear posters must include the slogan, “Only YOU Can Prevent Wildfires”, and Woodsy Owl posters must include the slogan, “Lend a Hand – Care for the Land!” The poster should depict the slogan and use accurate colors for the animal’s uniform. Entries are 11x17 inches and can be made using any type of art materials. No 3-D posters, computer scanned or electronic­ally generated images. On the back of the poster, in the lower right hand corner, write artist’s name, grade, teacher’s name, school name, school address and phone number. On the back also write: Pecan Grove Garden Club, 2200 W. 28 th St., Yuma, AZ, marlenap@ ag.arizona.edu. Deadline to send entries to Marlena Parrot is Jan. 21.

• Nov. 10 – Happy birthday to the Marine Corps, 245 years old, A committee of the Continenta­l Congress met at Tun Tavern in Philadelph­ia, PA to draft a resolution calling for two battalions of Marines able to fight for independen­ce at sea and on shore. On Nov. 10, 1775, the Marine Corps was born. Semper fidelis.
