Quick Hitters Transfers lead No. 4 UVa to rout of Towson in Bubbleville
UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Virginia coach Tony Bennett already had a roster that was expected to compete for a national title this season, even without sharpshooter Trey Murphy III, who was expected to sit out a year after transferring from Rice.
But Murphy persuaded his coach to apply for a waiver from the NCAA and on Tuesday, the team learned it had been granted.
The fourth-ranked Cavaliers’ newest weapon scored 21 points in his debut Wednesday, a season-opening 89-54 rout of Towson.
“We’re so glad that he gets to play,” Bennett said. “You saw his strengths. He’s looked good in practice. He continues to adjust and understand.”
Fellow transfer Sam Hauser added 19 points and Jay Huff added 14 points for the Cavaliers, who never trailed and led by 23 points at halftime.
No. 23 Ohio State beats Illinois State in season opener
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Justice Sueing scored 19 points and No. 23 Ohio State jumped out to a 22-0 lead en route to a 94-67 win over Illinois State on Wednesday in the season opener for both teams.
Due to COVID-19 concerns, the game was played before about
100 school officials and media inside 19,100-seat Value City Arena.
The Buckeyes created their own energy as Sueing, making his Ohio State debut after transferring from California and sitting out a year, had seven points in the team’s opening surge. He was 8 of 9 from the floor in his first game action since leaving Cal, where he averaged 14 points and six rebounds as a sophomore in 2018-19.
E.J. Liddell had 16 points while Duane Washington and Zed Key each scored 12 for the Buckeyes. Key, a freshman, also had five rebounds in his college debut. C.J. Walker chipped in 10 points and six assists.
Antonio Reeves led Illinois
State with 17 points and Howard Fleming Jr. added 15 points.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Ayo Dosunmu scored a career-high 28 points, freshman Adam Miller also scored 28 and No. 8 Illinois beat North Carolina A&T 122-60 on Wednesday in the season opener for both teams.
Kofi Cockburn added 18 points and 10 rebounds for his 13th double-double in 32 games. Dosunmu had 10 rebounds for his second career double-double.
Bayern extends winning streak, reaches Champs League last 16
MUNICH – Robert Lewandowski scored again to help Bayern Munich reach the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 3-1 win over Salzburg on Wednesday, the defending champion’s record-extending 15th straight win in the competition.
Lewandowski gave Bayern the lead in the 43rd minute with his 71st Champions League goal, matching Spanish forward Raúl’s tally. Only Cristiano Ronaldo (131) and Lionel Messi (118) have more.
Bayern’s 20-year-old American defender Chris Richards started for his Champions League debut, taking the place of Lucas Hernández on the left. Richards switched to the right when Hernández, who picked up a knock in his previous game, came on in the 62nd.
Spanish midfielder Marc Roca also made his first European start for Bayern. But the former Espanyol midfielder, who had made only one Bundesliga appearance since joining in the offseason, was sent off in the 66th minute with his second yellow card for a late challenge on Zlatko Junuzovic.
