County offers free virtual classes on Diabetes Type 2 prevention
People who suffer from diabetes or have a family history of the disease can sign up for free virtual classes on prevention of Diabetes Type 2.
The classes will be offered to both English and Spanish-speakers begining in April through the Yuma County Public Health District’s chronic disease program.
Cynthia Espinoza, coordinator of the program, said classes will be provided virtually for up to 20 people who have been diagnosed as prediabeteic or who certain characteristics of the disease.
“Those who have a family history of diabetes can register – that is to say, their parents or sibling have the disease, they suffer high blood pressure, have little or no physical activity, are overweight, or, in the case of women, have had gestational diabetes,” she said.
She said instructors for the classes are health educators certified by the Centers for Disease Control who will discuss how to lose weight and live healthier lives through balanced diet and moderate physical activity.
“What we are looking for is for participants to acquire the tools so they can make changes in their lifestyles naturally,” she said.
“We know there are many ‘miracle’ products that offer rapid weight loss, but medically it has been demonstrated that the healthiest, most economical and long-term way to do it is through balanced eating and moderate exercise, like walking at least 30 minutes a day.”
To sign up for the classes or get a test for prediabetes risk, call 317-4572 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
