ON STARZ

- BY GEORGE DICKIE OF ‘HIGHTOWN’

You directed the third episode this season. Are there things that you can bring from directing into your performance?

Yeah, I think so. Now that I’ve had a few episodes under my belt, now that

I’m a much more experienced director, I do understand the kind of pieces that are moving behind the camera and that’s very informative as an actor. As an actor, I now appreciate all of the big moving parts that are happening around me. So what happens is I feel like I’m able to honor the time as an actor that I have in a scene, understanding how precious the time is. So it sort of inspires

me to, not work better but to work more fully so that I am constantly staying at work, that I’m constantly – not like in the scene but I’m constantly connected to the scene as an actor so that I can fully be present for whoever the director may be

at the time.

How do you fly under the radar filming in Provincetown, Mass., which is pretty concentrated?

Yeah, it is pretty concentrated but it’s very inclusive. It’s also a town, remember, that relies on a lot of tourism, so like when we have a whole crew coming over to film, P’town really opened their arms. We’re not subtle

when we take it over because it’s so small that it’s very clear that there’s a TV show being filmed. But the town has been so incredibly supportive and the people of P’town are delightful and kind to us, and we’re just like really grateful

that the city is letting us film there.

It’s really a beautiful place.

Oh yeah, stunning. Funny, I had never been to P’town until I got hired to do “Hightown,” and it was my first time ever being in Provincetown when I filmed Season 1. So it was really exciting that my first experience in P’town was from Jackie’s perspective (laughs). More Jackie

than Monica.
