GOING ON: An annual quilt show featuring quilts, wearable art, and other items made by club members. Proceeds from the opportunit­y quilt will be donated to the Yuma Child Burn Survivor Foundation. COST: $7 to enter

Saturday Jan. 7 YUMA MEDJOOL DATE FESTIVAL

WHEN: 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.

WHERE: Main Street, Yuma

GOING ON: The Medjool Date Festival celebrates a tasty fruit grown locally. The event will also feature live music, including Checker’d Past, the Gwynn Sisters, the Chavez Family Band and Fleetwood Max, a San Diego-based Fleetwood Mac tribute band. The festival will also feature local celebrity chef demonstrat­ions, community performanc­es, a kids’ zone, festival food and cold beer for sale.

Jan. 19 IN THEIR OWN WORDS

WHEN: 3 p.m.

WHERE: Arizona Western College Theater, 2020 S. Avenue 8E

GOING ON: AWC will host a documentar­y screening and Q&A presented by Quechan elders Dan Golding and Preston Arrowweed. The Hokan Media films “Journey from Spirit Mountain” and “Songs of the Colorado” tell the stories of the Quechan/kumeyaay people and speak to the importance of the preservati­on and continuanc­e of the Yuman language. Issues of human rights, personal identity, and social justice are also discussed in the films.
