Saturday Jan. 7 YUMA MEDJOOL DATE FESTIVAL

GOING ON: The Medjool Date Festival celebrates a tasty fruit grown locally. The event will also feature live music, including Checker’d Past, the Gwynn Sisters, the Chavez Family Band and Fleetwood Max, a San Diego-based Fleetwood Mac tribute band. The festival will also feature local celebrity chef demonstrations, community performances, a kids’ zone, festival food and cold beer for sale.

GOING ON: AWC will host a documentary screening and Q&A presented by Quechan elders Dan Golding and Preston Arrowweed. The Hokan Media films “Journey from Spirit Mountain” and “Songs of the Colorado” tell the stories of the Quechan/kumeyaay people and speak to the importance of the preservation and continuance of the Yuman language. Issues of human rights, personal identity, and social justice are also discussed in the films.
