When talking about scarring, we often mention the word "keloid". What does it mean?
Keloid scars are cirrhosis resulting from injury or spontaneously, and spread beyond the wound. Most often they develop on the skin of the upper part of the body: on the back, earlap, in the area of the sternum, shoulders, blades, elbows, sometimes in the area of the knees.
This means that the treatment of the scar need to be started as soon as possible, otherwise it will turn into keloid scar, isn’t it?
The keloid scar is formed not always. Mainly in case of burns, suppuration, inadequate comparison and tension of wound edges, the normal process of scarring is disrupted, the peculiarities of the immune system, inheritance. Instead of a flat scar, a swollen or protruding keloid scar is formed over the skin.
When to begin to treat a new scar?
Scar formation can be in three stages.
In the first 10 days, the wound begins to heal.
Infection and divergence of wound edges are possible during this period. Therefore, for prevention are used to do the sutures, the wound is disinfected, frequent banding is required, the doctor recommends to limit the physical load to avoid repeated injury.
The next stage is formation of a bright pink scar, which is still easily stretched.
The final stage is the formation of a "mature" scar, which is formed about three months after injury.
The scar is pale, compacted and already less at risk of repeated injury. However, if repeated damage occurs, a keloid scar may occur.
When treated, the wound recovers within 4-12 months. Surgical removal of the scar is done not earlier than 6 months after the injury, and to prevent the formation of a rough scar it is required immediately to consult with the attending doctor.
