Singer to host free shows at schools across country
Young singer and songwriter Phương Mỹ Chi of HCM City will host a series of free music shows at schools across Việt Nam to share her love for Vietnamese folk culture and music.
The shows will be held at high schools, colleges and universities in the city, Cần Thơ City, and Cà Mau Province in June.
The performances will include popular songs from her latest album Vũ Trụ Cò Bay (The Flying Stork Universe), featuring Vietnamese folk tales and literary works about the country, women’s fate, family and love which are told through folktronica, a genre of music comprising various elements of folk music and electronica.
It was nominated for Album of the Year award at the Cống Hiến (Devotion) Awards 2024 launched by Thể Thao&văn Hoá (Sports and Culture) newspaper of the Việt Nam News Agency, while Chi was nominated for Female Singer of the Year.
Along with her hits, the shows will also introduce her new songs which will be released in June as well.
Chi, 21, shared at a press conference in HCM City on April 8 that “through the school tour, I want to evoke and spread national pride in Vietnamese people”.
Chi invited DTAP, who composed songs and produced her album, to be the music director of the project.
DTAP consists of three talented music producers, Nguyễn Trần Hoàng Thịnh, Trần Quốc Khánh and Võ Thanh Tùng, who have produced numerous award-winning productions.
Chi joined the music industry in 2013 after being runner-up in the first season of The
Voice Kids of Việt Nam, a reality television singing competition for children from six to 14 years old, based on the concept of The Voice Kids of Holland.
Having a sweet and strong voice, Chi quickly became famous among audiences with folk and contemporary folk songs such as Quê Em Mùa Nước Lũ (Flood in My Homeland), which helped her win Bài Hát Yêu Thích (Favourite Song), a music television show produced by Việt Nam Television (VTV), in 2014.
She was later nicknamed Cô bé Dân Ca
(Folk Girl) due to her love and passion for folk music and traditional culture.
She has released some singles and albums of folk songs such as Thương Về Miền Trung (Send Love to the Central Region).
In 2023, Chi introduced the album Vũ Trụ Cò Bay, which was quickly ranked No 1 on itunes Vietnam on September 23. She later hosted a showcase at Marie Curie High School in District 3, attracting more than 3,000 fans, mostly students of schools in the city.
