There are three steps in generating carbon credits. The first is assessing emissions facilities three years before the implementation of a project. The second is assessing emissions reductions and estimating the volume of carbon credits from the second year. And the third is assessing feasibility, completing appropriate registrations, and conducting independent assessments.

The mandatory starting point is the baseline emissions value three years prior to project implementation. When setting up an emissions project, businesses must prepare a greenhouse gas emissions inventory for these three years, as a basis for calculating emissions reduction capacity.

Calculations do not necessarily need to be conducted for the entire process, but can be done at a specific stage, for example the wood gluing / pressing or waste treatment stage in the production process. Regardless of what stage emissions are measured, it is necessary to comply with ISO 14064-1:2018 standards, greenhouse gas emissions scopes following the GHG Protocol, and the basic emissions index following the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

In order to make a correct assessment of emissions volumes and emission reductions, Japan’s Ministry of Industry and Trade recommends that businesses apply lifecycle assessment (LCA) methods under ISO 14040, 14044, and 14067 standards. Notably, through conducting an LCA analysis, there have been many examples of production costs being reduced and optimized, enabling businesses to achieve both emissions reduction goals and efficient production.

With its strengths in human resources and technology, FPT IS stands ready to accompany wood businesses in preparing emissions reports and conducting their green transformation. Our experts fully understand the requirements and practices of international environmental, social, governance (ESG) standards, such as ISO 14064-1:2018, the GHG protocols, and the basic emissions index following the IPCC.

FPT IS is investing in research and collaborating with industry-leading experts and advisors on green transformation solutions for businesses. It is also focusing on developing two strategic outcomes: the Carbon Accounting Solution (VertZéro) and the ESG Reporting Solution. These aim for the comprehensive digitalization of environmental data collection, calculation, and management and greenhouse gas reporting and monitoring to comply with international standards. This is also the first Made-in-Vietnam greenhouse gas emission inventory solution developed by FPT. ■
