GOVT URGED TO EXPEDITE CONSTRUCTION OF UNIVERSITY
Recently o ernment announced that it has sourced
million for the construction of uni ersities in Katete Eastern Pro ince Nalolo and Kabompo in estern and Northestern pro inces respecti ely. Nalolo ni ersity in estern Pro ince would be offering sciences and mathematics with Katete’s in Eastern offering agricultural programmes and Kabompo’s in North- estern pro ince specialised in information technology programmes.
n a communi u of recommendations after a two day youth forum on accountability and human rights in the context of extraction industry to enhance accountability organised by the Jesuit Centre for heological Reflection (JCTR), the said uni ersity would accelerate deelopment of education in the region.
hey said North- estern was one of the pro inces that was largely contributing to the P of the country through mine taxes.
Additionally go ernment should build more secondary schools that will be feeding the uni ersity and also ta e ownership of community schools in the pro ince the communi u read in part.
hey said there is congestion in most schools which could only be decongested by constructing more schools and conse uently help teachers teach sizeable classes.
hey said building more schools would also reduce on the number of pupils that drop out of school because of distance they co er to access some schools.
he youth ha e also demanded that go ernment reinstate the mineral re enue sharing mechanism clause which was in the Mines and Minerals Act of .
Further go ernment should adopt clear guidelines on how the re enues from the mines will be redistributed for local beneficiation.
e demand that a percentage mineral royalties collected should be redirected to local communities through the district de elopment coordinating committee because it has more representation than the local authority they added.
