Chavuma residents call for removal of livestock in township

- By JACK MAPAPAYI

RESIDENTS of Chavuma in North Western Province have called on the local authority to stop rearing of livestock in the township.

The concern follows yesterday’s road accident, in which a motorist hit into a herd of cattle that were in the middle of the road around 19:00hrs. Two animals died on the spot.

The residents charged that the animals were proving to be a nuisance to the community, urging the council to swing into action and curb the practice of keeping animals in the township which had existed for a long time.

The residents said this yesterday during a Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) community meeting on the promotion of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR) held at God Is Great guesthouse.

And responding to the concerns by residents, Council Secretary Robbie Chitambo assured the them that the local authority will act within the conforms of the law to ensure livestock was no longer reared in residential areas.

Mr. Chitambo has since implored the local traditional and church leadership to help sensitise community members regarding the issue of livestock in residential areas.

He said all stakeholders should be involved in the exercise and not just leave it in the hands of the local authority alone.

“So, it is my humble appeal to everyone that we coordinate and work together in curbing this practice,” he said.
