Zambia, a land of nolles, acquittals

-

Dear Editor,

THE rising number of nolles being entered in our courts are not only embarrassing but clearly point to shoddy police investigations.

Why the police in fact bother to take cases to courts at all is equally baffling because they already know that they are not going anywhere.

So where does the problem lie today because at the end of the day, these cops only end up embarrassing our Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Something has gone terribly wrong with our police lately. Either they are not up to it or serious corruption is at play.

The other danger of these nolles is that people will have no fear for the law because they will know at the end they will be free either through poor police investigations or corruption. Both are not just bad, they stink.

So what does Police IG Mr Kanganja think about this scenario which I am sure is also worrying him.

It just can’t go on like this, something must be done and done now so that justice can prevail in our nation.

At the rate criminals are let free it is just mind-boggling and it cannot be a just a question of sheer coincidence.

I may be wrong, but I also suspect the role of the powerful cartel which has undoubtedly infiltrated our Judiciary because it has money and money can buy anything in this world.

It should not be only traffic police which are seen to be working (for their pockets of course) on our roads today through their famous road blocks.

I have seen them in action and boy they mean business. They have in an open van and make sure that each one of them “handles” a number of mini buses and vehicles before they are collected back to the office.

The best road to see them in action is in Lumumba Road and Freedom Way. Awe Mwandi twasebana!

Thomas Shamboko.
